Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. The 25th batch of the Chinese medical team in Sierra Leone, along with experts from the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), has undertaken a significant effort to combat malaria in local communities. This initiative coincides with the upcoming World Malaria Day on April 25 and aims to raise awareness and provide medical support to those affected by the disease.

Starting this Wednesday April 17th, 2024, the Chinese doctors launched a two-day free medical program at the Rogbangba Community. This program offers essential medical services to the community members, including diagnosis, treatment, and preventive measures against malaria.

Lu Chaoqun, the leader of the Chinese medical team, emphasized the severity of malaria as a major health threat in Sierra Leone. He highlighted that their primary goal is not only to treat the existing cases but also to prevent the further spread of the disease. Additionally, the team aims to promote good hygiene practices within the community to reduce the risk of malaria transmission.

Anita Kamara, Sierra Leone’s senior malaria management coordinator, voiced her concerns about the unequal access to quality healthcare services. She stressed that while everyone has the right to timely and affordable malaria prevention and treatment, this is unfortunately not the reality for many in Sierra Leone. Kamara pointed out that infants and young children are particularly vulnerable, facing the highest mortality rates due to malaria. She also highlighted the disparities in access to education and financial resources, which further exacerbate the risks associated with the disease.

The Rogbangba Community chairman, Evangelist James Clifford, expressed his gratitude towards the Chinese medical team for their continuous support. He described the free clinic as a timely blessing for the community. Clifford also conveyed the community’s anticipation for more such initiatives and support in the future.
