ECOWAS Court Delegation Visits ACC Headquarters in Freetown

Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. The President and Vice President of the ECOWAS Court of Justice, along with other members of the Court, visited the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) in Freetown on 29th July 2025.

The meeting was held at the ACC’s Conference Room at Integrity House.

The visit took place during the Court’s mission to Sierra Leone, where its delegation is leading a training session for State Attorneys from the Law Officers Department. The aim of the training is to help Sierra Leonean lawyers gain a better understanding of how the ECOWAS Court works. The need for this training has grown in recent years, especially as Sierra Leone has often had to seek legal help from Gambian lawyers on ECOWAS Court matters.

According to the Deputy Minister of Justice, this is an area where improvement is needed, especially given the history of legal education between the two countries. The delegation’s meeting with the ACC was seen as an important part of the visit, given the Commission’s central role in the justice system.

During the meeting, the ECOWAS Court President noted the value of engaging with national institutions like the ACC. The Vice President also spoke about the limited number of Sierra Leonean lawyers who are familiar with the Court’s procedures and encouraged efforts to change that. He pointed out the importance of improving the country’s legal presence within the ECOWAS system.

ACC Commissioner Francis Ben Kaifala welcomed the delegation and described the visit as timely. He shared the ACC’s approach to working within the law and noted the Commission’s close coordination with the wider justice sector. He also spoke about his interest in legal interpretation and praised the ECOWAS Court’s development of legal thinking in the region.

The visit formed part of the Court’s broader effort to strengthen regional legal ties and expand cooperation among West African justice institutions.
