Education Ministry Warns Against Charging Students for Life Cards And Exam IDs

Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. The Ministry of Basic and Senior Secondary Education (MBSSE) has issued a strong warning against the practice of school leaders demanding payment from students for their life cards and identification numbers prior to taking examinations.

The Ministry expressed serious concern over reports circulating among the public alleging this practice.

The Ministry unequivocally condemned such actions, labeling them as a form of corruption that will not be tolerated. Officials emphasized that students should not be subjected to these conditions to receive essential examination documents.

In an internal memo dated April 15, 2025, Frances N. Kamara, the Director of School Quality Assurance, Management and Resources within the Ministry, instructed all Deputy Directors of Education and their teams to set a firm deadline for school leaders to distribute pupils’ identification numbers and life cards/BRS before the commencement of any examinations.

The Ministry further urged Deputy Directors and their teams to intensify their monitoring and supervision of school activities, particularly during critical periods leading up to examinations.

The statement concluded by emphasizing that all school leaders are expected to adhere to ethical standards and prioritize the well-being of students above all else.
