Freetown City Council Begins Construction Projects in Cemeteries and Schools

Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. The Freetown City Council, under the leadership of Mayor Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr and Deputy Mayor Kweku Lisk, Esq., has announced the commencement of significant construction projects aimed at bolstering public safety, preserving community dignity, and improving educational infrastructure across the city.

The initiative includes the construction of new perimeter walls for key sites, specifically targeting cemeteries and schools in Freetown. This move is part of the council’s broader “TransformFreetown – Transforming Lives” development plan.

Among the projects, new perimeter walls are being erected at Ascension Town Cemetery and the D.T. Akibo-Betts Junior and Senior Secondary School in Tower Hill.

These new constructions follow the recent completion of a 304-meter wall at Kissy Road Cemetery, an investment of approximately 1.3 million New Leones in taxpayer funds. This completed wall provides a secure and dignified boundary for one of Freetown’s oldest burial sites, aiming to enhance security and prevent vandalism and encroachment on graves.

The Ascension Town Cemetery will receive a 126-meter-long perimeter wall, costing 226,000 New Leones, further enhancing security for the burial ground and reinforcing the community’s commitment to maintaining respectful memorial sites.

Additionally, the D.T. Akibo-Betts Junior and Senior Secondary School in Tower Hill will benefit from a new 210-meter fence, a crucial component of the school’s infrastructure, built at a cost of 715,000 New Leones. This project is intended to significantly enhance the safety and security of the school environment and is a key component of the city’s broader initiative to improve educational facilities.

During the commissioning ceremony, Mayor Aki-Sawyerr and Deputy Mayor Lisk emphasized the critical role of infrastructure development in promoting community well-being, security, and dignity. The event saw the presence of community leaders, stakeholders, and residents, who expressed their appreciation for the council’s dedication.

The Freetown City Council stated that the successful completion and commissioning of these projects signify progress in urban development and community empowerment, demonstrating a commitment to fostering a thriving community through investment in essential infrastructure.
