Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. The Gento Group of Companies has asked the government for support to build a rail link connecting the Banana Island Transshipment Port with the Kasafoni Iron Ore deposit.
The project aims to improve Sierra Leone’s mining exports and boost economic growth.
According to a report by Standard Times Newspaper, the proposal was brought forward as part of wider discussions on infrastructure development in the mining sector. The plan includes constructing a high-standard rail line and using existing port facilities to move iron ore more efficiently for export.
During a press conference held on Tuesday, Finance Minister Ahmed Sheku Fantamadi Bangura identified five key infrastructure projects needed to support the planned mining operations in Kasafoni. He explained that these developments are necessary for the successful opening and long-term running of the mine.
Gento Group CEO Mohamed Gento Kamara shared his company’s intention to handle the required infrastructure if granted the chance by the government. He also confirmed that Gento Group has already entered into arrangements to use existing facilities, including Pelpel Port and the Banana Island Port, to support the movement of Direct Shipping Ore (DSO). With the government holding a 20% interest in Pelpel Port traffic, this setup could help reduce costs and avoid delays tied to building new ports.
The Gento Group says its approach focuses on using what is already available, such as roads and ports, to avoid large expenses and keep things running smoothly. The goal is to grow Sierra Leone’s export volume from around 20 million tons of minerals to a much higher level, without taking on major debt through new construction.
Minister Bangura also noted that proper infrastructure could help districts with key mineral resources grow economically. He pointed to the importance of connecting remote areas and creating new opportunities in local economies.
While the proposal presents new economic possibilities, some concerns remain about how communities will be included. In past projects, residents in places like Koinadugu district have raised concerns over mining operations that left them out of planning and decision-making. Chiefs and other local leaders have said that new developments must ensure that host communities benefit from any resource extraction on their land.
Kamara has responded by saying his company plans to work closely with these communities. The Gento Group says it sees local involvement as a key part of stability and development around mining sites.
Talks between the government and the Gento Group are ongoing. If approved, the proposed link between the Kasafoni mine and Banana Island Port could create new export routes and help shape the future of mining in Sierra Leone.
