Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. A good number of the people of Bonthe District are now with the belief that President Julius Maada Bio has fulfilled his promise after the completion of the new Mattru Jong–Senehun Bridge, which replaces a ferry crossing that had been in place for more than 64 years.

The two-lane bridge connects Mattru Jong with Senehun and nearby areas. It was part of a promise made by Bio during a visit to the district in June 2023, when he officially launched the start of construction. During that visit, the President spoke to more than 20,000 people in Jong Chiefdom, sharing personal memories of using the same crossing in his youth, and instructed the contractor to finish the bridge within 15 months.

Now, just over a year later, the bridge is completed and ready for use. The Director General of the Sierra Leone Roads Authority (SLRA), Ing. Alfred Jalil Momodu, and his team managed the work to make sure all the technical requirements were followed.

The bridge makes it easier for people to travel between chiefdoms in Bonthe District. It replaces the old ferry system that had been used since 1958. Farmers in the area, who had long struggled to transport their produce, now have better access to markets, reducing waste, travel time, and cost.

SLRA workers were present throughout the project to make sure it was done on time and met all the needed standards.

This is one of five major bridge projects underway. Work continues on the Manowa Bridge in Kailahun, the Tomparie Bridge in Karene, the Ngedema Bridge in Kenema, and the Bumpeh Ngao Bridge in Bo District.

The SLRA promised to share updates on those projects as they progress.
