Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. The Government of Sierra Leone is shifting its Mpox response strategy from home-based care to facility-based treatment following a significant increase in cases.
As of May 17, 2025, the National Public Health Agency (NPHA) reported 130 new infections, bringing the total number of cumulative Mpox cases across all districts to 2,559. Higher case numbers have been observed in the Urban and Rural Western areas of Freetown and Bombali Districts.
In response to the escalating outbreak, the NPHA today inspected the newly established Mpox Treatment Center at the Police Training School (PTS) in Hastings. Led by Deputy Minister of Health Dr. Charles Senesie and NPHA Executive Director Prof. Foday Sahr, the inspection aimed to ensure the facility’s readiness to safely manage and treat confirmed Mpox cases before patient admissions commence.
The repurposed treatment center comprises five buildings, each equipped with 10 rooms containing 19 beds. This provides a total capacity of 950 beds, with an initial 400 beds made available for a phased intake of patients to allow for operational flexibility. The facility will also provide essential hygiene supplies to patients during their treatment.
“This center is a testament to the government’s dedication to containing the Mpox outbreak and delivering high-quality care to those affected,” stated Dr. Senesie during the inspection. “Our focus remains on ensuring that all necessary systems are in place for an effective response.”
Patient admissions to the PTS Mpox Treatment Center are scheduled to begin on May 18, 2025. The facility is expected to be a crucial component of the national response strategy, offering isolation, treatment, and supportive care for individuals diagnosed with the virus.
The Ministry of Health and the NPHA continue to urge the public to follow health guidelines, promptly report any suspected cases, and support ongoing efforts to contain the Mpox outbreak. The NPHA reiterated its commitment to addressing public health emergencies with preparedness and efficiency to protect the well-being of all Sierra Leoneans.
