WAFU: Sierra Leone National Female Team Stranded in Guinea

Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. Growing concerns are mounting over Sierra Leone’s participation in the 2025 West African Football Union (WAFU) Women’s Tournament as the national team finds itself stranded in Guinea barely days before the competition’s kickoff.

The Sierra Queens departed Freetown on Friday, May 16, en route to Mauritania, where the regional tournament officially began on Sunday. However, according to Hawa Dauda the team has yet to arrive at its destination and is currently stuck in Guinea.

She also revealed that her sources said that the delay is attributed to visa-related complications. Yet, conflicting accounts have emerged, with an insider at the Sierra Leone Football Association (SLFA) suggesting that financial constraints are the root cause of the team’s predicament.

She said that a source revealed to her that team cannot proceed because there’s no funding to support their onward travel.

As the WAFU tournament gets underway in Nouakchott, the uncertainty surrounding Sierra Leone’s arrival casts a shadow over the country’s ability to participate. Fans and stakeholders are now calling for urgent intervention from the relevant authorities to ensure the team reaches Mauritania and competes.

Meanwhile, neither the SLFA nor the Ministry of Sports has issued an official statement as of press time.
