Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. The Independent Media Commission (IMC), in partnership with the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ) and with support from BBC Media Action, has overseen the reconstitution of the governance and management structure of Community Radio Kolenten in the Kambia District. The process was completed on Wednesday, 26th November 2025, during a district stakeholder engagement described as a significant step in strengthening community media operations.

According to the IMC, the initiative is intended to improve accountability, transparency, and professionalism within the station’s administration. It also introduces a governance model that aligns with national media standards while involving residents of Kambia District more directly in the station’s management something participants described as a historic shift for community broadcasting in the region.

IMC Executive Secretary, Mr. Khalili Kallon, reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to supporting community radio stations as essential platforms for civic engagement. He noted that the new governance framework is designed to empower local stakeholders and ensure improved operational efficiency. Mr. Kallon also acknowledged the contributions of the outgoing board and encouraged the newly constituted board to adopt innovative methods to enhance sustainability.

SLAJ’s Secretary General, Mr. Edward Marah, commended the IMC for what he described as a progressive initiative. He emphasized SLAJ’s broader mission to promote ethical journalism and protect press freedom. Marah highlighted the importance of community radio in giving rural populations a voice and pledged continued support for capacity-building efforts across the media landscape.

IMC Commissioner Mr. Sao Lamin stressed the Commission’s ongoing responsibility to ensure that community radio stations comply with regulatory frameworks. He noted that strengthening governance structures is essential for credibility and long-term stability.

The reconstituted governance system introduces a management board tasked with overseeing editorial independence, promoting community participation, and strengthening financial accountability. Observers believe that this renewed structure will improve public trust and support the station’s relevance in addressing development priorities in Kambia District.

Community leaders, civil society organizations, and media practitioners welcomed the development, expressing optimism that Radio Kolenten will continue to serve as a reliable information hub. The station’s manager, Mr. Abraham Fofanah Janneh, acknowledged the support provided by the IMC, SLAJ, and BBC Media Action. He reiterated the station’s commitment to providing professional and community-centered broadcasting.

The restructuring is expected to contribute to improved governance within community radio operations nationwide, reinforcing the role of local media in democratic participation and development.
