Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. A loud explosion at the Central Business District (CBD) sub-power station located at the Sierra Leone National Museum has resulted in a total electricity shutdown in major areas of the CBD.
The incident, which occurred in the morning hours of Tuesday, 20th May, 2025, caused panic among pedestrians and office workers in the vicinity.
Speaking with an electricity technician from the Electricity Distribution and Supply Authority (EDSA), he confirmed to Sierraloaded that the cause of the explosion is minor. The technician assured that the transformer was not affected and that repairs could be completed within a short period.
Reportedly, the explosion was caused by minor sparking of wires in the power house during the night hours of Monday, May 19, which was not taken seriously, as it was deemed a minor issue.
Emergency response teams from the Sierra Leone Police, EDSA, and the National Fire Force quickly arrived at the scene to manage the situation. Their prompt action helped prevent the explosion from leading to a fire disruption, ensuring the safety of nearby individuals and properties.
As the situation develops, EDSA is expected to provide further updates on the restoration of power and any necessary safety measures to prevent future incidents.
