Lungi Bridge: APC Politician Tackles President Bio’s Aide on Social Media

Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. A heated exchange unfolded on social media between Abu Bakarr Boxx Konteh, a key member of the All People’s Congress (APC), and State House Communication Director, Myk Berewa, concerning the much-anticipated Lungi Bridge Project.

The Freetown-Lungi Bridge construction project was initially scheduled to commence in December 2024. The project is a 8 km long bridge with an estimated cost of $1.5 billion, designed to connect Freetown with Lungi airport and is part of President Julius Maada Bio’s “Big 5” vision.

Konteh initiated the discussion with a provocative post on social media, asking, “Myk Berewa how far is the Lungi Bridge? I am tired of waiting ooh, since 2020.” His comments resonated with a growing number of citizens frustrated by perceived government inaction, prompting a wave of support and criticism directed toward the ruling administration.

In his response, Berewa sought to contextualize the current government’s challenges by referencing former President Ernest Bai Koroma, who had previously promised to construct a bridge between Freetown and Lungi as part of a broader vision to develop Lungi into a second city.

“President Koroma said that the programme is not only about a physical bridge; it is also a mental bridge to a new way of thinking and doing things for our country,” Berewa stated, indicating that such promises have a history that precedes the current administration.

However, Konteh was undeterred, questioning Berewa’s focus on comparisons with past APC leadership. He accused the current government of squandering taxpayers’ money on initiatives like the Lungi Bridge that have yet to materialize, asserting, “Thank God APC did not waste taxpayers’ money on lunching the project twice.”

His remarks implied frustration with the current administration’s management of public resources and project execution.
