Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. The Mayor of Freetown, Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr, on wednesday 30th April 2025 commissioned the newly completed Wilberforce Village Market Complex.
The facility was delivered in response to a promise made to the people of Wilberforce during a community meeting in 2018.
At the time of the request, the market structure consisted only of a ground floor and pillars. The original project had been initiated during the tenure of former Mayor Franklyn Bode Gibson, following a community needs assessment. With the foundation already laid and the land secured, the current administration moved forward with construction and added new features to the plan.
The completed complex now includes a wet goods market on the ground floor, 11 shops for textiles and dry goods on the second floor, and an entertainment space with a built-in stage on the third floor. Additional storage spaces are located in the basement and behind the building.
Mayor Aki-Sawyerr described the day as memorable and said the project showed that hope can be turned into reality. The Wilberforce Village Market Complex is now ready to serve the local community.
