Minister of Agriculture Launches Major Investment in Mechanized Farming in Kono District

Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. The Minister of Agriculture, Dr. Henry Musa Kpaka has on Friday, 4th April, 2025 inaugurated a significant investment in mechanized farming, aimed at enhancing agricultural productivity in Kono District.

The initiative, led by Madam Siita Kaikai, an agribusiness entrepreneur, involves the introduction of six new tractors along with a complete set of modern farming implements.

The investment is poised to aligned with President Julius Maada Bio’s national initiative, the Feed Salone program, which encourages private sector participation in transforming food systems across the country.

During the launch event, Minister Kpaka highlighted how those new machines are set to revolutionize farming operations within the district, improving cultivation efficiency and establishing a sustainable model for future mechanization.

“The response from Madam Siita Kaikai to the President’s call is commendable. This investment represents a bold and timely move that complements our government’s efforts to promote mechanization throughout the nation,” said Minister Kpaka.

He further noted that successful models like the initiative could enable the government to unlock additional credit facilities, providing incentives for more private investors to venture into agricultural equipment.

In addition to the mechanization initiative, Minister Kpaka addressed the critical role of livestock in the livelihoods of local farming communities. He announced the Cabinet’s endorsement of the National Cattle Settlement Policy, aimed at reducing conflicts between farmers and herders.

The Minister also shared plans for a forthcoming $105 million Livestock and Livelihood Development Project, which he said will focus on enhancing the livestock sector, with Kono District playing a significant role in its execution.

The Minister confirmed that the investment signifies a transformative step for Kono’s agricultural landscape and represents ongoing efforts to foster partnerships between the government and private sector stakeholders to boost food production and sustainable farming practices.
