Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. The newly transferred Local Unit Commander (LUC) of the Sierra Leone Police in Pujehun Division, Superintendent Mustapha Gorgra, has launched a stakeholder familiarisation tour across Pujehun township aimed at strengthening collaboration with key community institutions.
During an engagement with the Motor Drivers’ Union, Superintendent Gorgra said the tour is part of efforts to build effective working relationships with stakeholders in his jurisdiction and to enhance coordination in maintaining law and order.
He emphasized the importance of community policing, urging drivers to work closely with the police. “Both drivers and police officers interact daily with the public, and we share a joint responsibility for safety, discipline, and social order,” he said.
Addressing youth concerns, Superintendent Gorgra warned against the use of harmful drugs, highlighting their long-term social and health consequences. He encouraged young people to acquire vocational skills such as carpentry, auto mechanics, plumbing, and electrical installation, noting that technical expertise promotes self-reliance and contributes to national development.
Also speaking at the meeting, Assistant Superintendent of Police Lawrence S. Taylor, Divisional Traffic Officer, clarified the legal provision that allows civilians to effect arrests when necessary. He stressed that suspects must be handed over promptly to the police for investigation and due process and called for stronger collaboration with the union to combat illegal drug trafficking and related crimes.
Responding on behalf of the union, Chairman Usman Kallon welcomed the visit, describing it as recognition of the vital role drivers play in national development and public mobility. He pledged the union’s continued support in addressing drug abuse and crime in the district.
The engagement highlights the strategic importance of partnerships between law enforcement and community stakeholders, reinforcing the principle that coordinated action is essential for sustainable development and public safety.
