Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. President Julius Maada Bio emphasized that Africa, home to 54 member states, must have permanent representation on the UN Security Council, describing the current lack as a historical injustice that needs urgent correction.

Speaking at the 7th Summit of the Committee of Ten (C-10) on United Nations Security Council Reform in New York today, President Bio called for immediate reforms to ensure Africa’s rightful place in global decision-making.

He reiterated the African Common Position, as outlined in the Ezulwini Consensus and Sirte Declaration, calling for two permanent seats with full rights, including veto powers if retained, alongside two non-permanent seats.

“Reform of the Security Council is not just desirable it is imperative. Without Africa’s inclusion, the Council will remain incomplete, unjust, and ineffective,” President Bio stated. He urged member states to act swiftly, warning that delays undermine both the Council’s legitimacy and its capacity to address global challenges such as conflict, climate change, pandemics, and economic crises.

Highlighting Africa’s contributions to global peace and security, President Bio stressed that the continent is not asking for special treatment, but for fair and equitable representation. He concluded by reaffirming Sierra Leone’s commitment to the cause and calling on the international community to support Africa’s legitimate demands.
