Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. Sierra Leone’s President, Julius Maada Bio has appointed Abu Bockarie Kokofele as the first Director-General of the National Social Protection Authority (NSPA).

This follows the passing of the Social Protection Act, 2024, which established the NSPA to coordinate social protection programs across Sierra Leone.

The NSPA will oversee efforts to bring together various social support initiatives from both government and private sectors. Its goal is to improve the delivery of social services and ensure that vulnerable groups receive necessary assistance without duplication.

A key responsibility of the NSPA is managing the Social Protection Breadbasket Fund. This fund supports programs such as cash transfers, social assistance, and employment initiatives to help those in need.

The Authority is also tasked with carrying out the National Social Protection Strategy for 2022–2026. This plan focuses on increasing the reach of social protection services, making them accessible to all, including children, women, and persons with disabilities. It also aims to improve coordination and build resilience to economic challenges.

Mr. Kokofele’s appointment is subject to approval by Parliament. Once confirmed, he will lead the NSPA in its efforts to improve social support across the country.

The government expects that the work of the NSPA will help reduce poverty and improve the lives of many Sierra Leoneans by providing better access to essential services.
