President Bio Calls for New National Minimum Wage Negotiations

Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. President Julius Maada Bio has directed the Ministry of Employment, Labour, and Social Security to begin negotiations for a new national minimum wage.

The announcement was made during the National Labour Conference at the Miata Conference Center.

President Bio emphasized the necessity of ensuring workers can “live with dignity,” stating that the current wage requires revision. He also acknowledged the significant role of the informal sector in Sierra Leone’s economy and pledged to accelerate efforts to integrate it into the formal sector.

“We are prioritizing the extension of national social security coverage to include informal sector workers, thereby offering millions of Sierra Leoneans access to critical social safety nets,” President Bio stated.

The call for a new minimum wage comes amid widespread concerns that the current rate of Le800 is insufficient to meet basic living costs.

Minister of Employment, Labour, and Social Security, Mohamed Rahman Swaray, has publicly acknowledged the inadequacy of the current wage, describing it as “too low” in a recent AYV Television interview. 1
