Rice Price Hits Le650 Due to Feed Salone Initiative

Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. The Presidential Spokesperson, Hon. Alpha Kanu, has attributed the recent decline in rice prices across Sierra Leone’s markets to the government’s flagship Feed Salone Initiative, describing it as a key driver in improving national food security.

Speaking to the press, Hon. Kanu highlighted the initiative’s growing impact on the local economy, noting that the strategic interventions under Feed Salone have begun to yield tangible results in stabilizing food prices and strengthening domestic production.

He explained that the initiative’s framework not only focuses on boosting agricultural productivity but also addresses market regulation and import management, ensuring that essential food commodities such as rice become more affordable to ordinary Sierra Leoneans.

“The rice we eat now before feed salone was over Le1,000, but now it is Le650. That is a big drop.” Kanu said.

“All the series of negotiations carried out between the government and importers to stabilize and reduce the prices of imported goods are part of the broader Feed Salone strategy,” Kanu revealed.

“This initiative is designed to make Sierra Leone more self-sufficient and less dependent on external food supplies.”

Hon. Kanu further emphasized that the Feed Salone Initiative remains central to President Julius Maada Bio’s development agenda, with its long-term goal of transforming Sierra Leone into a food-secure and agriculturally driven economy.

He commended the collaboration between government ministries, importers, and local farmers in supporting the policy’s successful rollout, stressing that continued cooperation will sustain the downward trend in food prices and enhance national resilience against global market shocks.

As the government intensifies implementation, Kanu assured citizens that Feed Salone will continue to focus on both production and affordability, ensuring that every Sierra Leonean benefits from the nation’s agricultural progress.
