Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. International Credit Union Day was celebrated in grand style at D. BIM–D. BAM, Wellington Street, Pademba Road Junction, Freetown, bringing together credit union members, government officials, and the diplomatic community to highlight the role of cooperative finance in national development.
The event was organized by the National Cooperative Credit Union(NaCCUA) in partnership with the Irish League of Credit Union Foundation, the event began with a colorful march from Tawopaneh, Fourah Bay Road, to the venue, symbolizing unity and teamwork among Sierra Leone’s credit union members.
The program officially opened with guest registration and prayers, followed by introductions of participating credit unions.
A representative from NaCCUA highlighted the importance of credit unions in promoting savings culture and supporting community development, while ILCUF reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening financial cooperatives across the country.
Distinguished dignitaries, including the Ambassador of Ireland, officials from the Bank of Sierra Leone, and representatives from the Ministries of Trade, Industry, and Internal Affairs, delivered remarks recognizing the critical role of credit unions in fostering economic empowerment.
The Minister of Planning and Economic Development, who served as Chief Guest, commended ILCUF and partners for supporting grassroots financial inclusion, noting that cooperative models remain key to sustainable national progress.
The ceremony concluded with performances of credit union songs and a vote of thanks to all stakeholders.
This year’s celebration reaffirmed the resilience, unity, and transformative impact of credit unions in strengthening Sierra Leone’s financial landscape.
