Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. Sierra Leone has secured fifth place in the 2025 Africa Open Parliament Index (Africa OPI) with a score of 72.40%, reflecting significant improvements in parliamentary transparency and democratic governance.

The country ranked above nations such as Nigeria, Rwanda, and Uganda, highlighting the efforts of the Sixth Parliament of the Second Republic under the leadership of Speaker Segepoh Solomon Thomas.

The Africa OPI, developed by the Africa Parliamentary Monitoring Organisations Network (APMON), evaluates parliamentary openness based on three criteria: transparency, civic participation, and public accountability.

Sierra Leone achieved 53.64% in transparency, 48.64% in civic participation, and 38.64% in public accountability. The top five countries on the 2025 Index are South Africa (79.69%), Ghana (77.60%), Kenya (73.96%), Zambia (73.44%), and Sierra Leone (72.40%).

Updated biennially, the Index serves as a tool for tracking progress and fostering collaboration between parliaments and civil society organizations across Africa.

Sierra Leone’s improved ranking underscores the country’s ongoing commitment to strengthening legislative institutions and promoting democratic norms.
