Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. The Sierra Leone Police (SLP) successfully concluded a two-day in-service training program for traffic police officers on Friday, 15 August 2025.
The training aimed to enhance the skills and operational efficiency of traffic officers, equipping them with updated knowledge and best practices to improve road safety and enforce traffic regulations effectively across the country.
During the opening ceremony, Inspector General of Police (IGP) William Fayia Sellu emphasised the importance of comprehensive capacity building within the police. He highlighted that training should be accessible to officers across all ranks, rather than being limited to a select few who travel overseas.
Speaking at the training programme, which targeted investigators and point duty officers, IGP Sellu stressed that utilising local resources for training would be more cost-effective and would ensure a wider reach.
“The image of the SLP in the public eye largely depends on investigators and point duty officers,” he said. “Training in traffic management and crime scene handling will enhance professionalism and bolster public confidence.”
He urged officers to uphold fairness in case handling, maintain high standards in traffic management, and apply their inherent qualities diligently while on duty.
“Sharpen your talents and apply them effectively, especially at crime scenes,” he advised, warning that an overemphasis on monetary gain rather than service was undermining the core values of the SLP.
“Serving the nation means safeguarding lives and property. That should remain our ultimate focus,” he added.
Commissioner Abdul Moijueh, Director of Traffic Management and Road Safety, delivered the welcome address and provided an overview of the training. He noted that the programme aimed to equip traffic police officers with enhanced professionalism, thereby improving the SLP’s public image and operational effectiveness.
The two-day training was organised to strengthen the capacity of traffic police officers and promote best practices within the organization.
