Sierra Queens Seek WAFU Semifinal Spot vs Senegal

Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. The Sierra Leone women’s national football team, the Sierra Queens, are on the cusp of a potential semifinal berth in the 2025 WAFU Zone A Women’s Cup as they prepare for a decisive final group stage match against Senegal.

The crucial encounter, scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at the Stade Cheikha Boïdiya, is a must-win for the Sierra Queens to advance in the tournament.

The Sierra Queens currently sit third in Group B with three points, having scored three goals and conceded four. Their position is precarious, as Gambia, also on three points, holds second place due to a superior head-to-head record.

Group leaders Senegal, with a perfect six points from two matches, have already secured their qualification for the semifinals. Guinea remains at the bottom of the group without a point.

A victory against Senegal is paramount for the Sierra Queens, but their progression will also depend on the outcome of the simultaneous match between Guinea and Gambia. Both games will kick off concurrently, adding to the tension of the final group stage.

The Sierra Queens enter this high-stakes match with renewed confidence, following a crucial 3-1 victory over Guinea in their previous outing. This win revitalized their hopes after an initial 3-0 defeat to Gambia in their opening group match.

The team’s resilience was evident in their strong second-half performance against Guinea, with Juliet Brima opening the scoring in the 65th minute and goalkeeper Hannah Juana earning the Woman of the Match award for her pivotal contributions.

Led by Head of Women’s Football Haja Ramatulai Kamara, the 28-member Sierra Leonean delegation, including 20 players and eight officials, arrived in Mauritania on May 21 after an intensive training camp in Guinea. Head Coach Ernest Hallowell has consistently praised the squad’s discipline and determination throughout their preparations.

With team spirit reportedly high in camp, the Sierra Queens are determined to rise to the occasion and make their nation proud as they chase a historic semifinal appearance in the WAFU Zone A Women’s Cup.
