Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. The Head of Special Duties at the Sierra Leone Ports and Harbour Authority (SLPA), Idrissa Mago Tarawally, has confirmed the illegal exit of three containers from the port, contradicting social media claims that 16 containers went missing.
Speaking in an interview with Unity Broadcasting Online Television, Tarawally said the authority conducted an investigation following the viral social media reports.
The investigation revealed that the documents used to clear the containers were recycled, prompting further scrutiny. The team also visited Freetown Terminal, responsible for loading containers, where officials presented release authorisations from Customs, along with supporting evidence.
Tarawally noted that while all necessary payments for the containers had been made, the scanning process flagged them due to a duplicate document previously used for vehicle clearance. The containers were subsequently sent back to Customs for clarification.
He added that investigations are ongoing to determine how the containers illegally exited the port and assured the public that measures will be put in place to prevent such occurrences in the future.
