Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. The Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) today commenced its two-day National Delegates Conference at the party’s headquarters in Freetown, with the Political Parties Regulation Commission (PPRC) closely monitoring the proceedings.
The conference, scheduled for July 30 and 31, aims to elect new national officers for the ruling party. The PPRC, in a press release issued on July 29, confirmed its oversight role, stating that its presence aligns with its constitutional mandate to ensure transparency and compliance with legal frameworks.
The Commission urged the SLPP leadership and members to adhere to the party’s constitution, national laws, and democratic principles. It specifically cited Section 35(2) of Sierra Leone’s 1991 Constitution, which requires political parties to uphold democratic standards in their internal processes.
The PPRC cautioned against any violations of the SLPP’s 2020 Constitution, the 2021 Rules and Regulations for Executive Elections, the 1991 Constitution, the 2022 Political Parties Act, and the Public Order Act of 1965. It also called for a peaceful and orderly election process.
Day one of the conference began with registration and breakfast, followed by the arrival of the party’s national leaders. Key activities included opening prayers, a statement from the National Chairman, adoption of resolutions, and a keynote address by President Julius Maada Bio. The Independent Elections Management and Oversight Committee (IEMOC) will later take charge of the elections.
Day two will feature further deliberations, the announcement of election results, and the adoption of conference resolutions before adjournment.
The PPRC advised aggrieved parties to follow lawful channels in addressing any concerns. The conference marks a critical step in the SLPP’s leadership transition ahead of future electoral contests.
