Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. Vice President of Sierra Leone, Dr. Mohamed Juldeh Jalloh has officially launched Phase 3 of the Sierra Leone Electrification Project at Connaught Hospital to enhance the reliability of electricity supply within its facilities.

The commissioning ceremony took place Thursday, 12th June, 2025 at the historic hospital, attended by senior government officials, engineers, healthcare professionals, representatives from the Ministry of Health, and members of the community.

The phase of the project introduces advanced solar systems and improved grid connectivity, ensuring uninterrupted power for hospital operations.

Minister of Health, Dr. Austin Demby, emphasized the importance of this project, stating, “This electrification initiative marks a turning point in our efforts to strengthen essential services. Reliable electricity at Connaught Hospital will enable faster emergency responses, protect critical medical equipment, and improve patient care.”

He asserted the hospital’s ongoing struggles with power disruptions, particularly in emergency and surgical departments, and expressed optimism that the new energy infrastructure would alleviate these issues, allowing for extended service hours and better patient outcomes.

Dr. Demby also noted that this initiative aligns with Sierra Leone’s Energy Sector Recovery Plan and the UN Sustainable Development Goal 7, which focuses on ensuring access to affordable and clean energy for all.

Ms. Ngozi Beckley-Lines, Country Manager for Sustainable Energy for All (SEforALL)—the organization responsible for implementing the project—discussed the broader implications of the electrification effort.

She stated, “Launched in 2022, the Sierra Leone Electrification Project is a multi-phase program aimed at achieving nationwide energy access. Phase 3 focuses on powering urban health facilities and strategic institutions, with Connaught Hospital as a key beneficiary.”

The commissioning of Phase 3 showcased the government’s commitment to improving public services through sustainable infrastructure development, ultimately enhancing the quality of life for citizens across Sierra Leone.
