Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. The National Water Resources Management Agency has announced a district-wide groundwater assessment initiative in response to declining groundwater levels in Kono District.
The initiative is being undertaken with essential support from United Nations International Children Emergency Fund (UNICEF) Sierra Leone and in partnership with multiple governmental and non-governmental organizations.
Key partners in the collaborative effort include the Ministry of The Environment, Environment Protection Agency Sierra Leone, Ministry of Health through the District Health Management Team, the National Minerals Agency, Kono District Council, Koidu City Council, and various civil society organizations.
Over the next month, dedicated teams have poised to conduct thorough analyses of water points throughout Kono District. The objective, according to the team, is to map the current state of groundwater resources and identify sustainable solutions that will enhance water security for local communities, support agricultural needs, and safeguard resources for future generations.
“This collaboration is a vital step toward safeguarding water security for communities,” the National Water Resources Management Agency stated. The assessment is said to provide essential data that can guide future interventions aimed at ensuring reliable water access for the district’s population.
As the initiative progresses, organizers encouraged community members to stay tuned for updates and insights derived from the assessments. Together, they aim to transform gathered information into actionable solutions that can address the pressing challenges posed by groundwater depletion.
