Africa-Press – South-Africa. The education department in KwaZulu-Natal said that the burning of classrooms at the Empolweni Secondary School in the province would not disrupt or delay exams at the school.

The department said that a number of classrooms were set alight in the school, situated under uMshwathi Local Municipality outside the capital city, Pietermaritzburg.

The department has condemned the incident, describing it as a criminal and cowardly attack on the future of pupils.

Education MEC Sipho Hlomuka: “We are calling on the law enforcement agencies to act on this, we are not going to tolerate anyone who is going to destroy the future of our learners, because it is not only about the walls but the future for our learners.”

Hlomuka added that measures had been made for pupils to be able to write their exams.

“As much as the school has been burnt, we’re continuing with examinations; we are making an alternative venue for our matric candidates to write their examination – even the other grades they are going to write their examinations.”
