Africa-Press – South-Africa. Former South African Finance Minister Malusi Gigaba will appear in court on Friday to face charges related to corruption that allegedly occurred during his tenure as minister of public enterprises, according to a statement from his office.
He will be charged in connection with procurement activities at the state-owned rail operator, Transnet, the statement said.
“I respect the processes of our constitutional democracy and will continue to cooperate fully with the legal system as it performs its duties,” he said. “My conscience is clear regarding my conduct in office.”
A panel that spent four years probing graft that took place during the tenure of former President Jacob Zuma recommended in 2022 that Gigaba and previous chief executive officers of Transnet should be investigated further with a view to prosecuting them for corruption and other crimes.
Gigaba served in the cabinet from 2010 until 2018, including as finance minister for a year after Zuma fired the respected Pravin Gordhan from the role in a late-night reshuffle of the executive.
Gigaba returned to parliament last year when he was elected as a lawmaker for the African National Congress.
