Africa-Press – South-Africa. Three children and their 34-year-old stepfather died in a shack fire in Midrand over the weekend.

On Sunday morning, neighbours were woken up by children screaming for help when their shack at Ivory Park Extension 10 was engulfed in flames. The children, between the ages of 9 and 17, were locked inside the house with their stepfather.

Residents were not able to save the family in time.

Ekurhuleni District Police spokesperson Captain Ben Matimulane said the cause of the fire was unknown at this stage and that local police had opened an inquest into the death of four family members in a shack.

He said the police recently learned that the mother was not in the house during the fire. “We only learnt that the mother was out, but we cannot say where she went and under what circumstances she left the stepfather and the children,” Matimulane said.

He said investigations would be carried out to establish the cause of the fire.
