Africa-Press – South-Africa. Hundreds of African National Congress (ANC) supporters are gathered at the Tamboville Cemetery in Ekurhuleni to honour the legacy of the party’s former president, Oliver Reginald Tambo.
The ANC’s senior structures are commemorating Tambo at his burial site on Sunday.
Tambo died in 1993, just two weeks after the murder of anti-apartheid activist and South African Communist Party (SACP) leader Chris Hani.
Between 1967 and 1991, during some of the darkest days of apartheid, Tambo served as the ANC’s number one, becoming the party’s longest-serving leader to date.
On Sunday, the burial site of the former ANC president is surrounded by hundreds of party supporters here to honour his memory.
Tambo is hailed as a leader who not only served the party with dignity and honour but as a stalwart who devoted his life to fighting oppression.
Tambo’s daughter, Nomatemba, said she is happy that her father has left a lasting legacy.
“There are so many ways that OR Tambo is being honoured, how he’s being remembered. All I can say is keep remembering and keep honouring him.”
ANC President Cyril Ramaphosa will deliver the OR Tambo memorial lecture.
