Africa-Press – South-Africa. Another fire has broken out in a building in the Johannesburg CBD, this time in Hillbrow.

Spokesperson for the Johannesburg Emergency Management Services, Nana Radebe-Kgiba, said they received a call about a fire in a building on the corner of Van der Merwe and Klein streets after 16:00 on Saturday.

She said it was a block of apartments.

No one was injured, and there were no fatalities.

“We extinguished the fire and there were no casualties. A preliminary investigation will be done to determine the cause of the fire,” she said.

Public Safety MMC in the city, Dr Mcini Tshwaku, said two rooms in an apartment were on fire.

Two fire engines and a water tanker were dispatched to the scene.

This is the fourth fire in the CBD in the last three weeks.

Three days ago, there was extensive damage to the Johannesburg CBD SA Revenue Service (SARS) branch after a fire ripped through the building’s basement.

Employees were evacuated and there were no fatalities or injuries.

On 31 August, 77 people died and more than 80 were injured when a fire gutted the Usindiso Building in Albert Street.

Two weeks later, a building in Delvers Street, only a few metres from the Usindiso Building, went up in flames.

No one was injured and everyone was evacuated safely.
