Africa-Press – South-Africa. Former Police Minister Bheki Cele wants the Parliamentary Ad Hoc Committee to investigate the entire criminal justice system and not focus only on police corruption.
Cele said there are police officers and prosecutors who are in prison serving time for various crimes and the system needs to be scrutinised thoroughly.
Cele was giving evidence for the last day before the parliamentary ad hoc committee investigating police corruption and interference.
Cele’s testimony continued on Friday, where he faced several questions around his experience as commissioner and the state of the country’s criminal justice system.
He also implored the committee not to just focus most of its energy on probing the police portfolio.
He said the committee and the commission must also target thecourt and prison systems, which he says also contribute to criminal activity.
“This kind of probe must help us look at the chain and up to this point, I’m still worried that the concentration is on the first segment, which is the police and the other people are having it nice to do whatever they want to do.”
On political killings, Cele said the problem is how criminality has taken over.
He said this needs both political will and the country’s security agencies to work together.
