Africa-Press – South-Africa. The weekend brought near gale-force winds to the Western Cape, with the inclement weather expected to continue on Monday.
Wet, windy and cold conditions are expected over the western parts of the Western and Northern Cape due to a cold front.
City of Cape Town Disaster Risk Management spokesperson Charlotte Powell said the situation was being carefully monitored.
She said:
Colin Deiner, head of the Western Cape’s disaster management service, said no major incidents had been reported over the weekend.
The South African Weather Service (SAWS) issued a yellow level 3 warning for damaging winds and waves, which are expected to continue until Monday night.
The severe weather is likely to cause difficulty in navigation at sea between Alexander Bay and Plettenberg Bay.
SAWS forecaster Surprise Mhlongo said winds reached speeds of between 40km/h and 60km/h, with a gust impact of 80km/h.
Monday’s winds are expected to reach similar speeds, with 40km/h recorded in the morning. This is likely to increase in Cape Town’s city centre.
The weather service also urged Western Cape residents to be careful while travelling on the N1, as the strong winds could cause problems for high-sided vehicles.
