Creche employee charged with attempted murder for allegedly burning toddler with boiling water

Africa-Press – South-Africa. A 27-year-old woman accused of burning a toddler with boiling water at a creche appeared in the Alexandra Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, facing a charge of attempted murder.

The two-year-old boy suffered severe burns to his legs and buttocks after 27-year-old Reneilwe Leso allegedly bathed him in boiling water at Stepping Stones Daycare Centre in Alexandra in January.

Leso was initially charged with assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm, but that was later change to attempted murder.

She is currently out on bail.

The matter, however, did not go ahead as planned after two witnesses did not show up in court.

The prosecution told the court that the police had not informed the doctor who examined the boy and another witness that they had to attend proceedings.

The State then asked for the case to be postponed to 8 February next year.

Child protection organisation Women and Men Against Child Abuse was at court to support the family.
