DA vs Mnqasela: Supporters of ousted Western Cape speaker Mnqasela gather outside court

Africa-Press – South-Africa. About 50 DA supporters sang songs backing ousted Western Cape legislature speaker Masizole Mnqasela outside the Western Cape High Court on Thursday.

They waved placards calling for justice ahead of his challenge to the party dropping him like a hot potato over alleged irregularities with some of his expenses.

He was voted out this week and replaced by Mobility MEC Daylin Mitchell, who just sealed a deal to reopen a hotly disputed taxi route between Paarl and Bellville.

A small convoy of the City of Cape Town’s Law Enforcement unit arrived to monitor the protest.

Supporters wore their blue T-shirts and waved their blue flags outside court.

A polite round of songs started, before the volume increased in the quiet street where court is on recess for all but urgent matters.

Mnqasela is challenging the way in which he was suddenly removed, with a minimum of ceremony, amid claims that he had muddled personal and legislature expenses.

In his court papers, he readily admits to some administrative errors, particularly due to the overwhelming nature of the speaker’s job, but hotly disputes any impropriety.

The main order of business in the court on Thursday will be Mnqasela’s challenge to the sudden termination of his DA membership.

He also contends that the party blurred the lines between party and state in dealing with a matter that essentially involves the public purse.

The DA has hotly criticised the ANC for letting allegations against office bearers drag on for years without any action, so its process of ousting Mnqasela will come under sharp focus in the court on Thursday.

The matter is expected to start at 11.30.
