Africa-Press – South-Africa. Five people were shot dead in Philippi, Cape Town, on Monday night, and a sixth was rushed to hospital after sustaining severe injuries.
Western Cape police spokesperson, Sergeant Wesley Twigg, confirmed the various shooting incidents in the area.
“Philippi East detectives are probing the circumstances surrounding five counts of murder and an attempted murder following shooting incidents that rocked the community late on Monday evening, leaving five people dead and one rushed to hospital in a serious condition,” said Twigg.
According to Twigg, crime scene reports indicate that a 35-year-old man and a 26-year-old woman were shot and killed in their vehicle in Sheffield Road. Three men – aged 21, 22 and 25 – were shot in Nondlwana Street.
Two of the men died on the scene and a 21-year-old victim was rushed to hospital. A 55-year-old man was shot and killed in Hlankomo Road in Lower Crossroads, a short distance from the other two scenes.
“The motives for these shooting incidents are yet to be established. The suspects fled the scenes and are yet to be arrested,” said Twigg.
The chairperson of Philippi’s Community Police Forum (CPF), Neo Motinyane, said: “Unfortunately, murder is a regular occurrence in our community. Almost every weekend, there are three or four murders.”
The ward councillor, Mboniswa Chitha, said the shootings were terrible tragedies, which had occurred in three streets in the area.
“Something of this nature hasn’t happened in a long time. We haven’t had multiple gruesome murders like this in a while,” he said.
“We don’t have finer details as the investigation continues, but we know something needs to be done to make sure this doesn’t happen again.”
