Africa-Press – South-Africa. Tributes are pouring in following the passing of renowned educator and diplomat, Dr Franklin Sonn.
The 86-year-old, who died on Saturday, was South Africa’s first democratic ambassador to the United States appointed by former President Nelson Mandela.
The Democratic Alliance (DA) has extended its condolences, saying Dr Sonn embodied some of the country’s finest qualities.
Party spokesperson Karabo Khakhau said Dr Sonn’s legacy is deeply felt.
“Dr Sonn expressed South Africa’s best qualities: a pursuit of justice, excellence, and national building.”
Meanwhile, the African National Congress (ANC) in the Western Cape said it is deeply saddened by Sonn’s passing. Dr Sonn led the party’s campaign in the province ahead of the historic 1994 elections.
ANC Western Cape spokesperson Sifiso Mtsweni said today’s leaders owe much to the foundations he laid.
“He carried with him a fortitude that asserted the dignity of every human being. His journey reminded us that leadership is not holding a position but rather how you serve the people. He confronted the apartheid system that tried to suffocate black intellect and ambition.”
