Eldorado Park tuckshop owner arrested after unregistered medication found in shop

Africa-Press – South-Africa. A 31-year-old Eldorado Park tuckshop owner was arrested on Thursday afternoon after various unregistered medications were found in his shop.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Mavela Masondo said they found Schedule 2 pain medicines and Schedule 5 anti-depressants.

“As a result of the joint and disruptive operation, a 31-year-old male and local tuckshop owner was arrested in Eldorado Park after law enforcement searched the shop and found high volumes of various unregistered medications. The owner was not licenced, permitted or authorised to distribute and sell these medicines,” said Masondo.

Masondo said the man was arrested and detained for contravention of the Medicines and Related Substances Act, Act 101 of 1965, Section 22A (15), Section 14 (1) and Section 22C.

“Not anyone may dispense or compound a medicine. It is a criminal offence to do so, unless such person is a veterinarian, a holder of a licence, or is authorised to do so in terms of the Pharmacy Act,” said Masondo.

Masondo said there had been reports of pupils experimenting with “Lean, Xanax and various other medicines”, which are distributed and sold at certain tuckshops and homes.

“Awareness in this regard needs to be created as the side-effects of Lean are dangerous and potentially lethal,” said Masondo.

The spokesperson for Eldorado Park’s Community Policing Forum, Shiraz Mia, encouraged parents to watch their children and report any suspicious behaviour.

“We are hereby sending a notice of alert to our community, parents and all, to be watchful over your children, and report any of this behaviour and activity in sales. This is a plea for the well-being of our children,” said Mia.

The man is expected to appear in court soon.
