Ex-cop charged with killing three at Cape Town hospital may go for psychiatric evaluation

Africa-Press – South-Africa. The man accused of murder following the shocking shootings at Cape Town’s New Somerset Hospital will be sent to a district surgeon to establish whether he needs to go for a psychiatric evaluation.

Jean-Paul Malgas looked grey and defeated as he stood in the Western Cape High Court on Friday for an update from his lawyer and the State on how far along his trial preparations are.

The stretched white T-shirt covered some of the tattoos of the ex-policeman from Vredendal who is accused of disarming fellow officer Constable Donay Phillips, who had escorted him to the hospital for treatment on 7 May last year.

He is alleged to have then shot and killed Phillips and two patients.

Nursing Sister Diane Seale was lauded for calming him with a hug and defusing the situation long enough for him to be sedated.

When he first appeared in court, his lawyer at the time said he was depressed and suicidal and did not want bail.

He remained in custody.

The Daily Maverick reported that his trip to New Somerset Hospital followed a situation in Hopefield, where he was shot after allegedly stabbing another officer.
