Africa-Press – South-Africa. Democratic Alliance (DA) leader John Steenhuisen said that the formation of the Government of National Unity (GNU) has been a reminder of the strength of South Africa’s democracy under which all citizens deserve to benefit equally.
In a video message to commemorate Reconciliation Day, Steenhuisen said reconciliation is not about forgetting the past, but rather about acknowledging it honestly and working hard to bind the wounds it caused.
He said it was the voters in the 2024 national elections that has tested true democracy and the GNU is now showcasing reconciliation at work.
“Your vote brought diverse parties together in a Government of National Unity, and your voice set us on a staff towards stability, cooperation and renewed hope.”
Steenhuisen said November’s retreat of GNU political party leaders at the Cradle of Humankind was symbolic in that it forced them to reflect on their common humanity in pursuit of improving the lives of all South Africans.
“Let us honour the courage of South Africans who continue to believe in our democracy and to use their voice and their vote to build a better future.”
