Africa-Press – South-Africa. The Gauteng health department says vaccinations for measles are available for children between 6 months and 15 years, amid rising infections in the province.
The province has 15 laboratory confirmed cases, with the latest case being reported in Tembisa last week.
Ekurhuleni has eight infections, followed by Tshwane district with four, Johannesburg district with two, and West Rand with one confirmed case. No cases have been reported in Sedibeng.
The department will also roll out vaccinations to early childhood centres (ECDs) and schools where parents must sign consent for immunisation.
The department has administered vaccinations to 43 000 children through its health facilities.
Gauteng Health MEC Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko said:
Adults who have not had the disease or haven’t been vaccinated can also get infected with measles.
Symptoms include fever, cough, runny nose, sneezing, and a sore throat.
Measles spreads by contact with saliva or mucus droplets from the mouth or nose of an infected person when they sneeze or cough.
