Africa-Press – South-Africa. The Water and Sanitation Department says Gauteng loses more than 2.3 billion litres that it receives from Rand Water daily due to leaks.

On Tuesday, the department gave an update on the first 100 days in office.

It said the province’s water woes have not been due to drought but what security challenges caused by aging infrastructure, illegal connections and credit management issues among others.

Deputy Minister David Mahlobo said the water losses in the province were unsustainable.

“Gauteng in general, out of the 5 billion litres that Rand Water is treating per day, more than 2.2, 2.3 billion litres go to the ground. And what does it mean – there is also a revenue component. They still have to pay for the entire 5 billion litres to Rand Water.”
