Grade 10 Brakpan pupil stabbed to death after pepper spray brawl

Africa-Press – South-Africa. A Grade 10 pupil from Geluksdal Secondary School in Brakpan, Ekurhuleni, was stabbed to death on Thursday.

The teen sustained the injury during a fight with three other pupils in the same grade and some others not from the school.

Gauteng education spokesperson Steve Mabona said the fight had been about the pupils pepper spraying other pupils at school.

“Subsequently, about eight learners confronted them about their behaviour, and they stopped. However, it is alleged that the perpetrators emerged after school in the company of unknown persons who are not from the school,” said Mabona.

The group reportedly started stabbing the pupils who had confronted them and one of the pupils died from a fatal stab wound.

An alleged perpetrator also sustained serious injuries, while one pupil had minor injuries.

Mabona said the department deployed councillors at the school.

Police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Sello confirmed that police were investigating the matter.

Gauteng education MEC Matome Chiloane said: “We are deeply saddened by the sudden loss of one of our learners, especially at the hands of such a violent act.

“We strongly disapprove of learners fighting with each other. We wish to extend our sincerest condolences to the affected family and school community at large.”
