'I'm trying to hold my tears back': Mixed emotions as inland pupils go back to school

Africa-Press – South-Africa. Excitement and anxiety were among the emotions many parents felt when they dropped off their children at Sharonlea Primary School in Randburg on Wednesday for the start of the 2023 academic year.

It was back to school for inland pupils in South Africa.

In Gauteng, 290 751 pupils were placed but 1 394 are still waiting for placements.

One parent who dropped off his son told News24 that he had mixed emotions.

“I’m excited but a bit nervous. But [my son], on the other hand, is very excited. We will see how the year goes,” the parent, who preferred to remain anonymous, said.

He added that he had a good experience with the education department’s online application system.

“Truth be told, the placement system was seamless. If the school is efficient, it makes things easier. So, I would say the process worked.”

Another parent who dropped off three children stood just outside the gate and watched her children from a distance.

She said:

Her two children are in Grades 4 and 2. The third child, a Grade 1 pupil, is her sister’s. She was grateful that the child had received a placement.

Another parent who dropped off her son, a Grade 1 pupil, said she was excited, especially because she got him into the school she had wanted him to attend.

“The system worked in my favour as he was accepted at three different schools, one of which was this one.

“I’m very emotional. I’m trying to hold my tears back. He even looks so handsome.

“He is also excited because when I dropped him off, he saw some of his friends from Grade R and he is with them now,” the woman added.
