Africa-Press – South-Africa. The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) had a busy New Year’s Day, arresting seven motorists for speeding and recording more than 6 000 speeding violations.

JMPD spokesperson Xolani Fihla said the department intensified efforts to clamp down on speedsters as holidaymakers’ return to their homes after the festive season led to an increase in traffic volumes.

“On New Year’s Day, the High-Speed Unit of the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) arrested a total of seven motorists for speeding,” Fihla said. “This included one incident where a motorist was driving at a speed of 189km/h in a 120km/h zone.

“All suspects were detained at the Lenasia South SAPS and released on R1 500 bail…” he said.

They will appear in court in Lenasia on different dates.

Fihla added that Metro Police recorded as many as 6 312 speeding cases on New Year’s Day alone.

He said:

MMC for Public Safety in Johannesburg, David Tembe, said the City’s contract with Syntel (Pty) Ltd for the provision of Advanced Law Enforcement and Crash Management services was bearing fruit.

He added that it could not have come at a better time.

“Compliance with the rules of the road and obeying set speed limits is non-negotiable, and perpetrators will be brought to book,” Thembe warned.
