Africa-Press – South-Africa. Johannesburg’s Nelson Mandela Bridge is closed for maintenance on Mandela’s special day.
The Joburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) announced the bridge’s closure for maintenance and cleaning on Tuesday and Wednesday.
The bridge in Braamfontein will be closed off at the Bertha Street intersection and the Ntemi Piliso Street and Carr Street intersections.
JMPD spokesperson Xolani Fihla said the bridge was closed to vehicles but would be accessible to pedestrians.
Fihla urged motorists to be patient during the maintenance and to use the Queen Elizabeth Bridge and the Biccard Street Bridge instead.
The Mandela Bridge, which was built in 1993 in recognition of the late statesman, links Braamfontein to the inner city.
Mandela was born on 18 July 1918. In November 2009, the United Nations declared his birthday International Nelson Mandela Day.
On this day, people are encouraged to spend 67 minutes – a minute for every year Mandela spent in public service – to help humanity in some way.
