Khayelitsha killings: 35-year-old man faces six counts of murder, appears in court

Africa-Press – South-Africa. A 35-year-old man briefly appeared in court on Monday morning in connection with the murder of six people in the Enkanini Informal Settlement in Khayelitsha eight days ago.

Thando Shuba appeared in the Khayelitsha Magistrate’s Court after he was arrested over the weekend.

Shuba was the only one who was arrested in connection with the murders, but police anticipate more arrests.

According to police, three gunmen shot dead two women and four men between the ages of 18 and 27 on 20 March.

National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson Eric Ntabazalila said: “Thando Shuba appeared [in] Khayelitsha Magistrate’s Court 1 on Monday morning. He is charged with six counts of murder.”

Ntabazalila said the case was postponed for a week (to 4 April) at the State’s request for a bail profile and the verification of the accused’s alibi. The killings occurred after five people were murdered in Endlovini informal settlement in the same area.

Police Minister Bheki Cele did a whirlwind tour in the area and promised speedy arrests.

Police initiated a 72-hour activation plan – a move involving various disciplines of the SA Police Service who join hands to track down perpetrators of crime.

However, they said no new developments were made.

The investigation continues.
