Africa-Press – South-Africa. A 33-year-old man accused of raping a 10-year-old girl in an empty flat has abandoned his bail application in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court.
He cannot be published as he has not yet pleaded to the rape charge.
On 9 August, the child had gone to buy bread and was returning to the flat, said Gauteng National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Lumka Mahanjana. “[The accused allegedly] grabbed the child and dragged her to a vacant flat where he raped her,” said Mahanjana.
She said the minor reported the ordeal to her mother, who was in Zimbabwe at the time of the incident.
According to Mahanjana, on 23 September, while the girl was with her father, she saw the suspect and pointed him out. “Together, they went to Pretoria Central Police station to report the matter, and the accused was arrested the following day on 24 September,” she said. He will return to court on 13 October for the allocation of a regional court date.
