Africa-Press – South-Africa. The police have arrested a suspect in connection with the murder of an e-hailing driver who was stabbed to death, allegedly by a passenger he picked up in Pretoria in December 2022.

According to the police, on 16 December, the driver received a request to pick up passengers in Garsfontein and take them to Eersterust.

“He picked up the passengers in his silver Volkswagen Polo hatchback,” they said in a statement.

“On arrival in Eersterust, it is alleged that the passengers robbed him of his belongings and stabbed him on the upper body.”

However, the driver managed to get away and drove to George Hood Avenue.

“Members of the community who saw him in distress called the police.

“When the police arrived, the victim narrated his ordeal, and an ambulance was called. He unfortunately succumbed to his injuries on arrival at the hospital,” the police said.

Around three weeks later, the police made a breakthrough in the investigation and arrested a 26-year-old suspect in Eersterust.

Police spokesperson Sergeant Sam Shibambo said the station commander of Garsfontein police station, Colonel Kerwin Solomons, had received a tip-off from a resident the suspect was at home and gave the address.

“Colonel Solomons, together with the members of SAPS Eersterust, rushed to the said address in Kanna Avenue and they managed to find the suspect,” Shibambo added.

“The police raided the suspect’s room and inside, they found the slain driver’s belongings.”

He said the suspect cooperated with police and as a result, “the net is slowly closing on his alleged accomplices”.

The suspect has been charged with murder.
