Africa-Press – South-Africa. A Gauteng man who allegedly killed his wife by hacking her to death with an axe and then attacked their 6-year-old grandson for recording the incident has abandoned his bail application.
John Nkgudi, 52, allegedly assaulted his wife, Tinny, 51, on 28 January by hitting her with a stick and a shovel and hacking her with an axe.
National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Lumka Mahanjana said the incident happened at the couple’s home in Vukuzenzele in Tsakane in the Ekurhuleni metro.
According to Mahanjana, Nkgudi allegedly arrived home intoxicated in the middle of the night and started arguing with his wife, who was in their room with their 6-year-old grandson.
“During the argument, it is alleged that the accused went outside and came back with a stick, shovel and an axe and started assaulting his wife… in the presence of the grandson.”
Mahanjana said during the alleged assault; the wife ran to the bathroom, where she died.
The grandson used a phone to make a video recording of the incident. When Nkgudi became aware that he was being recorded, he took the phone, assaulted his grandson with the shovel, locked him in a wardrobe and fled, said Mahanjana.
The couple’s daughter found her mother’s body and her injured son upon her return from work the following day.
Mahanjana said:
Nkgudi was arrested two days after the incident and showed the police where he hid his bloodstained clothes, added Mahanjana.
The Tsakane Magistrate’s Court postponed the case to 19 April 2023 so it could be transferred to the Regional Court.
In a separate case, Kagiso Thobela, 29, who is accused of killing his 32-year-old girlfriend, abandoned his bail application in the same court.
